Also a lot of *fun* when the stupid head gasket blows, (because recall not done nor fix was done) and it takes the entire engine down by perforating the entire block. (Same as early gen Supras of this vintage and engine) If you see Cressida’s of this gen in Craigslist between 90K miles and 120K - Run away unless they can prove a new head gasket was installed.

That’s kinda neat, but I wouldn’t want it in MY car.

The 7M’s really aren’t THAT bad. I once bought an X8 Cressida (same as the one in the video) with a blown head gasket for $500, fixed it, and sold it for a profit. The nice thing about 7M’s, is that once you fix the head gasket with a good quality part, and PROPER torque on the head bolts, they will last forever just like an old Toyota engine should.

Also, if you get one that has an intact gasket, you can just pop the valve covers off and retorque the head bolts right there with the cams still in it, that will get more life out of the gasket that’s already there.

But most times when the gasket blows it takes heads and blocks with it. I know because I also bought a Cressida, and while waiting for the head gasket set in the mail, it blew it within a week of ownership, making a hole in the block. Me & my buddy went hunting for another 7M, we found 4 cars with it (1 Cressida, 3 Supras) and most had blown gaskets and bent heads... we found one that seemed ‘fine’ only odd thing the bolt near cyl 4 was loose, vs the rest -...we took it home, only to find out, blown gasket too, Cyl 4 broken as well. Gave up. Proceed at your own risk.

I’ve never once heard of a head gasket “making a hole in the block”. When they go, usually it’s cylinder 6 and it smokes and overheats. Then you just resurface the head, clean the block, use a good-quality gasket, and torque the head bolts to updated specs and it’s fine. If you were to resurface the block (which usually you don’t need to because it’s iron and rarely warps, unlike the head) you’d have to make sure to have the front timing plate bolted on as well, as that acts as part of the deck, and needs to be surfaced with the block. If you forget that step, you’re boned.

Very similar to my SW20 MR2. A lot of the stalks and buttons are the same, even on the stereo though it wasn’t the same unit.
